Maury Burton Stern

Maury Burton Stern, age 85, died on September 26, 2026. He was born on August 6, 1941 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to David and Clara Stern. Maury graduated from UCLA and then went to USC Medical School. He was a pediatrician for 25 years at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek. In 1964, he married Susan Ratner. They had 3 children. After serving in the US Air Force they moved to Lafayette and stayed for more than 40 years. Maury had many passions. Two that stand out are bird watching and classical music. He could often be found with binoculars around his neck (instead of a stethoscope). His kindness, intelligence, and immense knowledge of history, art, classical music, and classic cars left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan; his children, Joel Stern (Holly Cooper), Stephanie Blitzstein (Lear Blitzstein); his grandchildren, Oscar and Sam Cooper Stern; his sister Sharlene Dane; nephew, nieces, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his son Gary, and his sister Sharon Hollander. A graveside service was held at Oakmont Memorial Park on October 4, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the organization of your choice.
