Flora Churnin

IN MEMORIAM

FLORA CHURNIN

Our dearest mother Flora Churnin passed away quietly and peacefully in her sleep shortly after midnight on May 22, 2026 just after reaching 100 and ½ years old. Second daughter of Samuel Farber and Mary Levine, she was born in New York City on November 21, 1925. She outlived her beloved siblings Jean Ganz, Elliott Farber , and Sheila Bickel. She married Douglas Churnin on October 11, 1943, just before he went off to Italy where he served in the Army Airforce until December 1945. She graduated from Brooklyn College which she attended during the War and became an elementary school teacher until 1990. Flora and Douglas have four children, Sharon Nash, Jon W Churnin, Nancy Granberry, and Marc Churnin. Flora and Douglas were happily married until Douglas passed on November 1, 2012.

Brilliant in her mind and scholastic achievements, she motivated her husband and children to attend college and beyond. All their future academic endeavors can be traced back to her. She set an example of excellence which each tried to follow. As a teacher, she adored her students and ran numerous science fairs throughout the years, helping her students to participate and learn the love of science. She set up prize systems with her students to reward their achievements and managed to motivate even the toughest children from the worst neighborhoods to participate and learn.

She was a gem of a wife, mother, and teacher.

We loved her so. We will all miss her and will carry her with us for the rest of our lives.
