He was born on October 18, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up he was an Eagle Scout and the photographer for his high school newspaper and yearbook. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1959, at age 23. He loved his family and his work as a mathematician.

After a year in Paris and Bonn, followed by two years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton he joined the Math Department faculty of the University of California, Berkeley in 1962 where he became a full Professor in 1966. At Berkeley, he was an Alfred P. Sloan Research fellow in 1966-1968, a Miller Research Fellow in 1972-73 and again in 1983-84, and a Dickson Emeriti Professor in 2014-15.

During the many years of his active life as a mathematician, which terminated only at his death, he spent periods of time at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Ruhr University Bochum, Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, Rutgers University, UC San Diego, and Harvard University.

Joe received the Medal of the University of Liège in 1977, an honorary professorship at the National University of Cordoba in Argentina in 1989, and the Humboldt Prize in 1995.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the AntiDefamation League or Planned Parenthood.
