Barbara Jean Hasten passed away from brain cancer on July 8, 2017 surrounded by her loving family at their home in Oakland. Barb was born in Seattle, WA in 1932 to Al and Esther Moore. Barb received her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/university-of-washington/?personid=186069153&affiliateID=662> and moved on to Columbia University in New York where she pursued her Master degree in Nutrition. Seeking new adventures in learning and people she joined the International Club where she met Kurt Aryeh Hasten. After living several years in New York, they moved to San Mateo, California together where Barb and Kurt raised two wonderful sons. Barb had a passion for the arts and education and would regularly attend plays, talks, orchestras, and operas in San Francisco and the surrounding bay area. When Barb wasn't on an adventure into the city she was making calls for her CLIR group, gardening, reading books for her book club, or engaged in deep conversation around one of her favorite operas. Barb had an opinion and a voice and was an active volunteer supporting her local political beliefs (green party). To ensure bus routes continued to serve the needs of her community she joined the SAM Trans Citizen Advisory Committee. She always took action for causes she was passionate about with more than just words.
Barbara loved to spend a month every summer out at their family home on Whidbey Island going on walks, swimming, playing bridge, exploring thrift stores, baking, and visiting with her family. Barb is survived by her son Joshua and sister Patty. She has 2 beautiful grandchildren who love her very much. Barbara will be truly missed.
Services are being held at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park Chapel at 11am Sunday July 16, 1301 El Camino Real, Colma, CA. Please feel welcome to make a donation to the PBS Foundation in Barbara's name.
