In order to fulfill its Chevra Kadisha (being a Holy Burial Society) duties to the entire Bay Area Jewish Community, Sinai Memorial Chapel opened a satellite office and preparation room in Lafayette.   At this location, advance planning is facilitated and at-need funeral arrangements are made.  Jay A. Lewis is the Executive Director in Lafayette.

In the 1980’s, some forward thinking East Bay congregations recognized that Jewish burial space in the East Bay was running out.  This group of congregations was called Gan Shalom.  Its mission was to find land and create a new cemetery.  That cemetery would be called Gan Shalom (“Garden of Peace”).

A beautiful 82-acre parcel was found in Briones.    The original group formed a partnership with Sinai Memorial Chapel to plan and develop the cemetery, which Sinai Memorial now managers. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in December, 2006
